Serving the Needs of Permanent and Temporary Residents at Altercare, Canal Winchester

Altercare of Canal Winchester – Post Acute Rehabilitation Center provides multiple opportunities for parishioners to participate in ministry for both temporary and permanent residents.  Every Saturday of the month at 11:00 AM one to two parishioners from Pope John XXIII gather together with the residents of Altercare to pray the rosary.  Prayer cards are provided for the residents to follow along with the individual decades of the rosary.  The volunteers spend approximately 30 minutes once a month on a rotating basis with the residents.  Of course, the more the volunteers get to know the individuals with whom they are praying the more they tend to spend some additional time catching up on events that occurred the previous week.  It is a rewarding thirty to forty-five minutes which the residents look forward to every week.

Once a week on Wednesday at 3:30 PM Mary Kay Clark leads a Communion Service for the residents.  This unique opportunity provides a rewarding experience as the spiritual needs of the residents are served.  As with the rosary the residents look forward with open and eager hearts to receive the Body of Christ.  There is always room for more than one parishioner to participate in this rewarding experience.  For those Catholic individuals who are unable to attend the Communion Service, distribution of the Body of Christ is conducted on a room by room basis.
Monsignor Anthony Frecker visits the residents of Altercare once a quarter to preside at Mass for the residents.  He anoints the residents at least once a year and at anytime there is a request from a resident or resident’s family.

Deacon Roger Pry leads an ecumenical service once a month for all residents of the Altercare facility whether they are a member of the Catholic faith or not.  The service begins at 2:00 PM on Sundays and is coordinated through the various faith communities in the Canal Winchester –Lithopolis Ministerial Association.

If anyone is interested in participating in these spiritual and social activities at the Altercare of Canal Winchester – Post Acute Rehabilitation Center on 6725 Thrush Drive in Canal Winchester, please contact Deacon Charlie Miller at 614.866.2859 x 101, Monday through Thursday from 9:00 AM to 4:30 PM or on the weekends after Mass.
